Background: Bug Doctor is one of the leading software packages to identify and zap bugs on your computer. The company offers a free software download and scan with no obligation. If you buy their software they also guarantee to fix your PC problems and back it up with unlimited human technical support. The whole business depends on the number of people who download the software and conduct a free scan of their computer. The company's home page took a typical long-form salesletter approach to convincing people to download the software. The goal of the SiteTuners engagement was to improve the conversion rate of the download process.
The Engagement: SiteTuners identified fifteen variables that might improve performance. For each variable, the original version was included in the test, along with one or more alternatives.
The fifteen variables tested resulted in 12,441,600 unique versions of the landing page. In order to find the best performing page, SiteTuners' proprietary Tuning EngineSM technology was used. This scale of test would have been impossible to conduct in a reasonable timeframe by using standard tuning methods like A-B Split or Multivariable / Taguchi testing (which are typically limited to a maximum of a few dozen unique site versions).
The Results: Over the course of the engagement, SiteTuners was able to zero-in on a number of successive "challengers" that performed significantly better than the original "baseline" version of the site. At the end of the test, the best challenger was run head-to-head against the baseline, and showed a 32% lift in conversion rate. The bottom line impact of this change on Bug Doctor was a $473,000 annual profit improvement.
